I want to be a good web designer. How long does it take?

to learn all the computer languages I need to know. I know html that is all. What else do I need to learn (like java) and how long does it take to learn all this stuff. Also what exactly is C++, MySql, etc and is it necessary to learn to design web pages? I appreciate all advice because I have just begun a web desin course and want to do this as my future career.

I%26#039;ve been a website designer for 10 years and worked on some major sites that I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ve been to. Here are my experiences in response to your question...

What else do I need to learn (like java) and how long does it take to learn all this stuff?

----------------------------

You need to learn basic principles of color and design layout. You can get a good handle on this in a couple of months but you will always be learning as you apply it. You will also need to learn javascript (which is like java, but easier) and ASP (which is a language for writing code also). This will take you longer. 4-6 months or so to get a good working handle on both of them. You will also want to learn Photoshop for designing images. This will take you the longest amount of time, but it%26#039;s well worth it.

Also what exactly is C++, MySql, etc and is it necessary to learn to design web pages?

----------------------------

C++ is a programming language. Although I know C++ I have never once used it in the design or implementation of a web page. Stick with javascript and ASP like I outlined above and you%26#039;ll be fine. MySql is a database program like Microsoft Access or SQL Server. This is another one of those programs that would be good to know, but not critical to work as a web designer.

I appreciate all advice because I have just begun a web desin course and want to do this as my future career.

----------------------------

This makes a good career. I really enjoy it. The pay is good and it%26#039;s a lot of fun. You get to be creative and solve problems at the same time. Best of both worlds. Send me an email or IM if you have any other questions, and good luck!

It all really depends upon what you want your web pages to do. If you are going to create web applications you need to know PHP, SQL, JavaScript.

It takes time to learn all these things, there is no real way to put a timeline together for how long it could take. The best way to learn about web design is to try it and test it out. HTML is a must but you also need to learn CSS. You really don%26#039;t need to learn C++ or Java for web design, unless you plan on encorporating computer programming into your web design.

There is a great tutorial for web design with soo much information on so many different language types:

Go Here: http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp

You will learn alot of the basics in your web design course, the basics of HTML, and possibly CSS. You said you want this to be your future career, well then I would suggest learning

HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, AJAX, JavaScript or VBScript and possibly XML

Best Wishes with your course and your future

Other Replys:my brother n law is one and it took him about 3 years to build good clientele.

Other Replys:that depends on how smart you are, how much money you are willing to spend for education, the type of classes you take etc.

Other Replys:Check out my website:

http://www.geocities.com/twigman428@sbcg...

That took about 1 week to learn all of the necessary HTML to make it

Other Replys:Buy dreamweaver. Since you%26#039;re a student, you get substantial discount. Then get a dreamweaver book from your local library. You%26#039;ll be able to design small business and basic informational websites in no time. When it comes to large scale e-commerce sites and database integration (MySQL is a database), that might take a little longer (about a year).

Other Replys:1-2 years, thats wat my cousin took :) all the best :)
