Should I design web sites for 1024x768?

I see a lot of news/information sites (CNN, CBS, NYT, CNET, LATIMES) that use a wider page layout for their sites. Is 1024x768 now common enough that I can design web sites with a width of, say, 980 pixels. For years, I%26#039;ve been using 760 as the max width. If these major sites are using wider layouts, should I?

No.

Go for standards.

Don%26#039;t do anything pixel based.

It%26#039;s time to move up. Almost everyone has 1024x768 or greater image resolution. Also, there%26#039;s no reason to stick to web safe colors either. Almost no-one has a 256 color monitor anymore.

Other Replys:you can design the web site that inthat resolution also but bear in mind to check for the horizantal scrolling.this will be a very poor quality web site. best of luck
