I have been working as a freelance designer for about three years now, but have not done much web design. I was recently asked for a bid on a website of 10-15 pages (starting off) and really don%26#039;t know what to charge. I typically charge on a per hour basis for most of my work, but have charged a flat rate for websites in the past. I%26#039;m afraid I%26#039;m selling myself short, but also don%26#039;t want to overcharge. I have a BA in graphic design, and, as I said, over three years experience in design work. The site will be done using HTML (maybe some Flash, which I also have limited experience in).
Anyone with experience in freelance web design, please help! Thanks in advance.
What is a reasonable rate to charge for web design?
It really depends on the complexity of the job. If you%26#039;re just drawing the homepage template, and it is of average complexity, then it is 150-250 euros. However, usually the price is as much as the client is prepared to pay. Sometimes they are willing to pay 400-500, so it is ok to charge more :) But it really depends on:
1. Complexity
2. Your experience
3. Your portfolio
4. Your education
5. Client%26#039;s pocket
P.S. contact me for some possible collaboration, I%26#039;m a web developer :)
What is a reasonable rate to charge for web design?
OK. First thing to find out is what the competition is charging for services you%26#039;d like to offer locally. There%26#039;s no point, as you say, in selling yourself short--but the opposite side of that coin is that there%26#039;s also no point in charging WAY over what the local market will handle. Even making anonymous enquiries over the phone might b enough to get you what you need.
Also, have a look to see whether there are any design bureaus up and running in your area, and if so, get yourself in there for a start. Even if you%26#039;re only joining the thing as an %26quot;interested observer%26quot;, you%26#039;ll still be able to find out just what the lie of the land is locally. There are so many variables involved in this that no one will be able, I reckon, to give you a catchall answer (at least, not one you can depend on!!!)--it depends totally on what is happening around you.
Good luck
