I don%26#039;t believe so. I%26#039;ve never seen one made using go live. You can make forum skins using golive and photoshop, but it doesn%26#039;t have the backend database. There is free forum software one of the most polopular is phpBB. If you want a domain you have pay for it. I recommand bluehost they have free forum software, free blogger software, free chat applications and up to 250 e-mail addresses for your domain at a rellay cheap price. Plus you can have up to 6 websites or domains on one account.

Looking for a free or very cheap webhost. I have no knowledge of code, html, php, CSS etc. I need a wysiwyg host or one that lets me to use MS Word/Publisher to create the site. Now, the moderators take it as an ad and won%26#039;t post it. It IS an ad but it IS non-commercial and it serves only to help their group or business- the site provides a means of cross-promotion with a company and organization directory. Also, people are on those Yahoo groups TO list their services, in other words, commercialism and talk are inherently associated in this domain. Cottage businesses where ladies exchange and talk about recipes and where to buy cheap materials. That being said, it%26#039;s as if my offering is rejected on the basis that %26#039;I don%26#039;t know you%26#039;, or that I am a male. Ok- i have designed a clothing line and it is growing very rapidly. I need to create a website ASAP and i have been looking around and talking to people I know. All I have been coming up with is sites like geocities or linkingcommunities.com that have boundaries and limits. It wont even let me create a domain name. If you don%26#039;t know how to build/maintain a website (including XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ideally some PHP), then you are definitely going to need to hire someone who does. It%26#039;s probably not a great idea to use your buddy who%26#039;s just learning HTML. For a good, sturdy e-commerce site, you need someone who really knows what they%26#039;re doing.

There are many shopping cart programs that you can get (ZenCart, CubeCart, etc...) that are compatible with PayPal and should be fairly simple for an experienced webmaster to integrate into your site.

Having a website can be costly, with domain registration, hosting costs, and paying someone to design and maintain it, but if you pull it off it will give your business a huge boost. Then you can start advertising with AdWords and Yahoo! advertising, and it will grow from there.

You cant run DNS server on Windows XP you need to built a server using Microsoft server software first and then you can use the tool to create a DNS or DHCP server. Windows XP is a sort of client into a Windows server.

because its hard to transfer names away from them but there cheap.

I%26#039;d prefer something that doesn%26#039;t force ads on my pages.

Having my own domain name is *not* important.

Support for languages such as PHP would be nice, but not necessary. Same goes for allowing me to host media files such as MP3s.

Comprehensive immigration reform is in jeopardy because it is a complex compromise with too many moving parts and too many competing interests. Employers want a guest-worker program; unions want to kill it. Reformers want to introduce a point system that preferentially admits skilled and educated immigrants; immigrant groups naturally want to keep the existing family-preference system. Liberals want legalization now; conservatives insist on enforcement 鈥渢riggers鈥?first.

There is only one provision that has unanimous support: stronger border enforcement. I鈥檝e seen senators stand up and object to the point system, to chain migration, to guest workers, to every and any idea in this bill 鈥?except one. I have yet to hear a senator stand up and say she is against better border enforcement.

Why not start by passing what everyone says they want? After all, proponents of this comprehensive reform insist that the current situation is intolerable and must be resolved. It follows, therefore, that however much they differ in the details of how the current mess should be resolved, they are united in the belief that such a mess should not be allowed to happen again. And the only way to make sure of that is border control.

So why not pass it, with the understanding that the other contentious provisions would be taken up subsequently? Because for all the protestations, many of those who say they are deeply devoted to enforcement are being deeply disingenuous. They profess to care about immigration control because they have to. But they care so little about the issue that they are willing to make it hostage to the other controversial provisions, most notably legalization.

Fences work. That鈥檚 why people have them around their houses 鈥?not because homeowners are unwelcoming, but because they insist that those who wish to come into their domain knock at the front door.

Fences are simple. They don鈥檛 require much upkeep. Two fences with a patrol road between them across the length of the U.S.-Mexico border would be relatively cheap, easy to build and simple to maintain.

Why this preference for the fancy high-tech surveillance stuff that presents no physical impediment to illegal entry but instead triggers detection 鈥?followed by alarm, pursuit, arrest and possible violence? It makes for great TV. But why is that good for the country?

It is certainly good for the Border Patrol, ensuring a full employment program till the end of time. But why for the rest of us? Fences have no retirement benefits.

The final argument against fences is, of course, the symbolism. We don鈥檛 want a fence that announces to the world that America is closed. But this is entirely irrational. The fact is that under our law, America is indeed closed 鈥?to all but those who, after elaborate procedures, are deemed worthy of joining the American family. Those objecting to the fence should be objecting to the law that closes America off, not to the means for effectively carrying out that law.

A fence announces to the world that America is closed to ... illegal immigrants. What鈥檚 wrong with that? Is not every country in the world the same? The only reason others don鈥檛 need such a barrier is because they are not half as attractive as America, not because we are more oppressive or less welcoming.

Fences are ugly, I grant you that. But not as ugly as 12 million people living in the shadows in a country that has forfeited control of its borders.

If you can find a place that is near a train station, then you never 20 minutes away from anywhere. I recomend the share house too, at least that way you could get some local knowledge.

There are some suburbs that are best avoided, but by and large, Melbourne is a pretty safe place. I%26#039;ve lived in the so called less disirable places, but I never felt threatend.

I%26#039;m opening a web designing company. Say I have some clients who need websites. Now I don%26#039;t own a server of my own, I just know how to make websites. So I use a hosting site as my server, for example www.uk2.net provide cheap hosting. So now, for each client I get, I buy 50gb hosting space on uk2.net and assign them a domain. But I will be advertising in my website packages that each package include 50gb of hosting space. Is this legal? Since the hosting space is actually coming from a different company?

1. Be super, super cheap.

I tried using Google for help, but since I%26#039;m new to this area, I don%26#039;t know the correct search terms. =(

Here%26#039;s my problem: A while ago, I created some cute designs (inspired a bit by something that I%26#039;m pretty sure is public domain). I%26#039;d like to protect my designs and later use them on T-shirts, cups, etc.

Based on the above info:

1) Is this correct (ie: did I use the right [terms])?:

--I%26#039;d [patent] my actual design/characters

--I%26#039;d [trademark] my company logo

...Would I need to patent (or copyright) ANYTHING else during this process?

2) How long are copyrights/trademarks/patents going to be in effect? I heard that copyrights last %26quot;70 years after my date of death%26quot;, but how do I keep it forever? What did Walt Disney do with Mickey Mouse, Goofy, etc.?

3) What are some OFFICIAL sites that handle copyrights, etc.? I%26#039;d hate to find a scam site...

1. Designs and characters can be protected under copyright and trademark. Similarly, a logo can be protected under copyright and trademark.

There is no way to %26quot;trademark%26quot; a company logo in the abstract. Trademark rights are established through use in commerce.

A design patent is for an ornamental design of a functional item. If I understand your facts correctly, a design patent is simply not applicable to your problem.

2. Patents are enforceable for 20 years after the filing of a patent application. Trademarks can be enforceable perpetually. Copyright term depends on a number of different facts. A chart for copyright term is below.

I have just designed my own web page in Publisher and when i upload it to the net one of my pictures does not display.

It just shows an empty box with a little square symbol in the corner. I have been told that it could be something to do with the link from the picture to the page but still not to clear.

You need to upload the pictures separately. Publisher should have a function, though, where you can bundle it all for upload--the web page, the pictures, the sounds, etc.

I have tried for the past 2 months to find anyone who could produce a dating site for me, but every company/individual so far have been lacking in quality. Many spelling mistakes, error links, non-current web pages, possible phishing sites, etc. Is there a place which I can trust to %26#039;authorize%26#039; top quality web designers/programmers so I am assured that I will obtain a high quality product instead of something which will obviously fail? (But still at outsourcing prices, i.e. 50% or less than Swedish web designer/programmer prices.)

Initially I thought it would be sufficient with the ISO 9000, but several claim to have that, and still can not show quality results.

But even without that tossed into the mix, nobody has as many top-notch programmers as they need. Even if a company were fully staffed today, the fact that they have great programmers would result in a lot of new business, and they would have to hire second-tier people to handle the load.

Realize that there will need to be several iterations to get *exactly* what you want, even if there are top-notch people working on it, because they can%26#039;t read your mind to figure out what you want.

Make payment contingent on producing acceptable results.

Specify that you want a data-driven site, that allows you to change the design of the pages without touching the code. Specify also that you want strings in a separate file, so that you can correct grammar and spelling, or translate the site to a different language, without touching the code.

Good luck. Whenever you hire someone else to write mission-critical software, instead of doing in in-house, you%26#039;re risking your business....

4.) Adobe Flash Professional 8 (do not learn to make all site on flash - buttons, banners, effects - search engines see whole flash website as a single element and u don%26#039;t want that).

On your own i would also recommend to learn some PHP and MySql for some magic forms, mailings ;)

If you don%26#039;t know HTML yet definitely take that course it will benefit you in any of the other courses. CSS %26amp; XHTML, Dreamweaver, Flash. Java is nice to know but isn%26#039;t used very much anymore the rest will be useful on any type of web development. Dreamweaver is used by many companies also so it would be beneficial.

Other Replys:squarespace is the cleanest, slickest, most efficient site out there. they have everything for your site; the only thing you have to figure out if you want a regular site or a blog. they assume that you want a blog, unless you%26#039;re not paying attention and haven%26#039;t stated otherwise.

everything is done through components and modules in squarespace; it%26#039;s all visual, and you%26#039;re not really programming anything. i%26#039;m not even sure if you can modify the code on that site. you can use redirects if you don%26#039;t want that squarespace address. it%26#039;s free for about 30 days then they start charging; cheapest rate is like $7 a month for 100 mb of storage and 2 gb of bandwidth - far more than what the average person will need. if you don%26#039;t already know bandwidth is a measure of how many people can access your site at one time, once it%26#039;s exceeded, people start getting 404 messages and stuff telling them to come back later.

they even let you advertise, which is something they wouldnt%26#039; do back when i had an account there. you can get up to 50 editors on your account with the premium service, which is like $17 a month. if you%26#039;re starting out, the $7 is a good option, but if you%26#039;re technical and prefer to code your websites and just need the storage I%26#039;d go with the $17. a lot of people don%26#039;t like to pay for websites but with the free sites typically force you to run their ads, and personally, if i%26#039;m running someone else%26#039;s ads i want a piece of the action.

if you want a truly free site though i%26#039;d go with geocities; they%26#039;ve been at it since the early days of the internet. yahoo acquired them but they still have a free account. you dont%26#039; get much though, only 15 mb of storage and 3 gb bandwidth, if you want your own domain name you have to get the pro package; you know that%26#039;s like yourname.com, assuming noone else has already taken your name and registered it.

tripod is still offering free accounts as well, they offer more storage on their free accounts. they%26#039;ve been around forever as well.

if you%26#039;re really looking for some old-school action try angelfire. they%26#039;re part of lycos, along with tripod, but they%26#039;re encouraging people to use their free poetry publishing along with their desktop blog editor. that%26#039;s really about it; you%26#039;ll find others, but they%26#039;re really obscure, and i wouldn%26#039;t recommend them because i haven%26#039;t used them. honestly, if you have the money to spare i%26#039;d just buy a pc and run it as a server and host your own site from home. then you can get a feel for both sides of it, developing the site, and administrating the system!

As to running your own server... well, Ubuntu is better than Windows in that respect... just add Apache and perhaps PHP and MySQL (if you%26#039;re going to be doing dynamic sites).

Here%26#039;s the problem with running your own server... (1) it%26#039;s probably against the terms in your agreement with your ISP, and can get your account suspended, (2) setting up your own domain servers is a highly technical endeavor... you need to know networking and your OS inside and out, and (3) your compute will have to be on 24/7 and you%26#039;ll need an ironclad disaster recovery plan with frequent and regular backups, and preferably a RAID system... and if your computer ever goes down or your power goes out (you have a backup battery, right) then your entire web site is out of business until it%26#039;s up and running again.

I work for a creative agency in Hollywood, and let me tell you right now that if you%26#039;re planning on making a living as a web designer purely off your technical skills, you are going to fail miserably. Being a successful designer is about mixing technology with the utmost creativity. Most %26quot;designers%26quot; don%26#039;t get that.

And if you intend on being successful -- meaning that you are indeed very creative -- then you ought to be able to think of a name.

Not trying to be harsh, just speaking the truth. This is a tough market.

I totally hear you, this is what I did... actually do. You have to be four people.

First you have to be a good designer. This only takes time and practice and good use of the internet for free tutorials (I%26#039;d link, but I don%26#039;t know what software you use).

Second, you have to be a good programmer. For some companies, this is two people, one who develops/designs and one who programs. The software program you use is probably 100% compatable for any programming needs. You%26#039;ll know a programming question if it%26#039;s %26quot;how do I get it to...%26quot; That too takes time and good use of tutorials. Maybe even purchasing some books on scripting language.

Third, you have to be a business person. You will need to do basic stuff like registering with your state, in Florida you can incorporate online for $85 (this means having articles of incorporation). You%26#039;ll also need an EIN from the IRS, you can get that free online, instantly. You%26#039;ll also need to do basic bookkeeping. You don%26#039;t have to be a whiz at math, just keep track of all monies. Keep receipts, make invoices, keep copies of all checks, keep everything!

Fourth, you have to be your own marketing guy. You can do everything else great, but if no one knows you%26#039;re there... Do some basic stuff like yellowpages, web site (should be easy for you) and that. But the best marketing comes from word of mouth. If you can, do some web sites pro bono for people who are connected to lots of other people and then you have someone who got a free website, you got a reference and practice (without the pressure of money involved) and if you%26#039;re lucky a referral on to other people...

What is the width, in inches, of a full web page for a normal and a widescreen monitor?

Firstly, a webpage and image are digital - they have no real dimensions. The width can be measured in pixels and the RATIO (old TV is 4 wide by 3 deep, widescreen can vary - mine is 16:10 (1440/900) compared to 4:3 multiplied up making 16:12 (1200/900).

My monitor is the same RESOLUTION as my friend%26#039;s monitor, 1440 wide by 900 deep. He has a laptop, 13.5 inches from corner to corner, and I have an LCD monitor 1440 wide by 900 deep. Web pages on his screen are smaller using the same number of pixels. If I display them at the same size, they are not clear - because my pixels are bigger.

To be honest, I don%26#039;t understand web page writers, when I view Yahoo Answers - if I want it to fit my screen I would need to view it sideways rotating my display. this webpage is THE WRONG way around to fill my screen, the width is 8.25 inches on my 16 inch wide screen (so I can open two pages side by side, that%26#039;s nice...) and it is very tall.

On my monitor, with no menu at the top or the bottom (browser maximised vertically) I have 9 inches. I would prefer the web page to be around 8 inches square, or 8 inches high by 10 inches wide. That would fit a normal screen, and on a widescreen monitor it would leave a space at the side for accessing a sidebar, or a vertical menu bar at the side (as I have).

To suit all monitors, a web page should perhaps fit the ratio of 800 pixels high and up to 1024 pixels wide rather than the opposite - but then instead of having a page which scrolls, it maybe a better idea to separate it into pages so that when you click %26#039;next%26#039; it will simply scroll the page down by 800 pixels like a powerpoint presentation - so you can design what you should see on the screen rather than a long scrolling page.

Yahoo never design a page that fits the screen - and I don%26#039;t know why. My friend designed a site to advertise his business, and it is 1024 wide and 800 deep, and so are the subpages. To limit problems with loading the page, he designed 4 screens and put them vertically in a single scrolling page so that you can either scroll it with the mouse, or click a title to JUMP to the part of the page you wish to see next.

If you%26#039;re going to start an online company, you%26#039;re likely going to need to get into a server-side language such as PHP and ASP, which involves actual programming as opposed to layout and design that entails HTML and CSS.

Timewise once you know what you%26#039;re doing, designing a site does not take long at all. You can develop a pretty substantial site in a week. although depending on complexity, you%26#039;d need more time for testing.

I work in a field of industrial equipment development and I am fascinated by the quality of graphics used in PC application windows such as the Windows Media Player but when I search the Internet I can%26#039;t find any tool or even a company that specializes in this kind of design. If you want a good WYSIWYG HTML editor, then I suggest taking a look at Composer. Its built into Mozilla%26#039;s Seamonkey browser and Netscape 7 (and supposedly will be back in Netscape 9). Barring that, I%26#039;d suggest looking on Snapfiles and seeing what freeware they have.

Whatever you do, stay away from MS Frontpage. It uses MS optimized HTML/XML standards. As a result some of the stuff gets done the MS way instead of the way the W3C standards say it should be done. That%26#039;s not an issue if you want only IE to work correctly with your site. If you want to make your site multi-browser, then avoid frontpage. (This is why abotu 15% of the websites on the %26#039;Net don%26#039;t work with Firefox and Opera.)

If you want your own domain name I recommend Godaddy. The cost about $7.00/year. Also they will host the site for free (with ads) if you get a domain from them.

I%26#039;ll give you some general guidelines just to help out.

Question 1:

What is your target market for viewing the sight and what does the site need to do? Is it just informational, will you be doing ordering, will it need to access a database to pull information?

You need to base your page size on a 28.8 modem connection and how long the page will take to load with a given size of the HTML / ASP / CFM file size. Assume that people don%26#039;t know how to navigate your website. Always remember KISS ( Keep It Simple Stupid ) it will save you headache in the long run. Stay away from lots of motion and flashing icons / pictures for a corporate website, it distracts attention and will usually take longer to load.

Question 2:

Again, depends on what you are using the site for. The requirements will change depending on the number of hits you expect to receive, what you are storing on that server and if you will need multiple computers.

A very complex system would be a web server with a min of 2 Gig ram and 100+ gig hard drive, a database server with roughly the same requirements, proxy server / firewall unless you are planning a different network structure where the web server is outside the DMZ of the corporate network. Also the design tools for building the site like a WYSIWYG editor Dreamweaver, VB Studio, SQL, exc.... and however much those licenses require you to spend.

I was told by someone that if users feel %26quot;navigationally challenged%26quot; when they land on a website...majority of them will leave your website within a minute, maybe less.

So, one of the primary factors that come into consideration is if your website has a good flow, so that users can navigate the site easily. This would mean good graphics, soothing to the eye (no contrasting, color styles)

Now also imagine yourself trying to visit a website that takes more time than you think it should to load. Will you be a regular on that site, probably not. It is important to use industry standards - CSS etc that helps to lower page load times.

What you have to keep in mind is your target audience. A considerable number of users across the world still dont have access to DSL or Cable internet. Would it make sense for them to access a site with Flash on it. Maybe have a flash version and a non-flash version of your site for users who have access to different bandwidth.

question 2:

Nowadays most data drives sites are developed using .NET or jsp. You could also use classic ASP, although that is slowly reducing in number. It will be upto your company to choose one development environment over the other. Once you know which environment to choose it should be fairly easy to understand what hardware requirements should be required to implement a website. If you have products to display, user accounts etc. I would say that you would also need a database software (SQL, DB2, Oracle etc.)

Yes you can edit it. A simple way to do it is to copy and paste the html and css code into notepad and change what you want to change and save it as a .html format.

It allows you to view the css coding of any page on the web; this is useful if you want to copy the codes and just change small parts of it.

Most graphics in premade templates can be edited in Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks. If the template comes with a file that ends with .psd you can edit it in Photoshop. If it ends with .png you can edit the graphic with Fireworks.

Once you have the image files customized you can edit the layout and text in an HTML editor like Macromedia Dreamweaver.

I%26#039;d say you could start by going to freewebs.com and make a website there... it%26#039;s free and they have some basic layouts for you... the only downside is that your website comes with advertisements on it... If you want your own server Yahoo I believe has it wher eyou can register a domain for $9.99 I think for a year... but then you%26#039;d have to buy a server and/or run the website off your computer.

If you want it professional looking and don%26#039;t like freewebs.com and want to design it yourself... that%26#039;s where it get%26#039;s expensive and I%26#039;d suggest using Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver...

Photoshop for graphics and Dreamweaver will help you with setting up the pages to where they look nice..

It%26#039;s both more than enough, and also NOT enough, all a the same time.

Here%26#039;s the problem... a truly successful, QUALITY website takes a large number of diverse skills that are rarely bundled up in one person. For example...

1) Design and layout and usability studies... the creative/artsy stuff.

2) Web programming, database design, writing program specifications... the software engineering stuff.

3) Writing for the web... tailoring content to be search-engine-friendly, developing strategies to successfully %26quot;market%26quot; a website, managing a flow of incoming data from contributors (to keep the site %26quot;live%26quot; and updated).... the advertising and writing end.

4) Managing database backups, managing and maintaining relations with the registered users... the %26quot;boss%26quot;, administrative, manager and IT department stuff.

A great way to measure what direction you want to go, and the skills that apply to the field that interests you... have a look at the %26quot;job roles%26quot; over on Brainbench... they recommend a specific set of certification tests based on the job role you%26#039;re after. Some of the tests are free, most aren%26#039;t... but you can look at the outlines of each test for free, and it will give you an idea of what topics you%26#039;ll want to cover.

Is this web development course well rounded?

That should be more than enough to get started. Once you get into it you%26#039;ll see what you%26#039;re interested in and focus on that. If you%26#039;re into pure HTML then you can focus on that. Most people use dreamweaver, its a pretty nice tool.

I think if you take that class you%26#039;ll do fine.

Other Replys:This would be a good start if you have never had any experience at all with web design. I do this for a living and most of the listed software is out of date but the methods should still be the same. If I were truly trying to learn from these classes I would focus my energy on studying HTML (xhtml) JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheets. You do not need any specific software to get started doing web development, just a good text editor (notepad) a browser (firefox) and a graphics manipulation program Gimp, paint shop pro, or the industry standard Adobe Photoshop.

Something that I do not see mentioned is SEO or search engine optimization which is very important if you want people to be able to find your web page.

AJAX is also something that is not mentioned in the list and it stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It is one of the most powerful implementations of web technologies today.

Also if you are planning to use the firefox browser (I highly recommend it) get the Web Developer Tool Bar and FireBug add-ons. They will make your browser an integral tool for the development of websites by extending your browsers capability so that you can study how other people have engineered some of your favorite web sites.

If you design your sites to be compatible with Firefox, Internet Explorer 6 or 7, and Safari you will cover the vast majority of all web browsers used on the market today.

Other Replys:No, I believe this aint really enough. Well this course seems to be a start but I dont really see any serious web programming in your syllabus. If you are just planning to become a designer then this would help, but if you are looking to be a developer this wouldnt suffice.

Try to go for a more practical oriented course as yours seems to be more into theories. And look for a course that involves serious web programming both server side and client side and also any popular accompanying DBMS.

I would suggest PHP/MySQL to be a good start and slowly move onto ASP, ASP.NET, C#, Perl, Java, JSP along with Oracle and MS SQLServer along with your above syllabus.

Anyway, one thing to keep in mind is that his criteria is mainly geared toward business sites. If you%26#039;re creating or running a business site then it is good to go by his criteria the best that you can (or want to).

My personal site kind of sucks by his criteria (text beneath the fold), but it%26#039;s a personal site after all and suites my uses.

I did, however, make changes as a result of his (and the other web designers who comment there) recommendations, and was happy with the results.

I always remind myself that it%26#039;s usually just a faze people go through.

Flash navigation does really annoy me, though. People who use Windows with updated browsers and Flash may see no problem with it (and wonder why others would since they never experienced it from any other PC but their own). With my Opera on Linux, Flash can be problematic at times.

Some people just don%26#039;t understand that not everyone uses Windows and IE (or Firefox). I consider it a little arrogant of sites that %26quot;require%26quot; that in order to view them. I usually leave them quickly, rarely bothering to open them in my Firefox.

One of the designers that fequent there started a forum, it isn%26#039;t very lively, but he really knows his stuff as well (he gave me some good suggestions on my site awhile back).

A little background... I%26#039;ve been kind of a burnout, and have the opportunity to go to school. I want to be a web page designer. As far as I can tell, as long as you can create a great website, you can find a good job in this career. So, would it matter if ITT tech was accredited or not, as long as I%26#039;m good at what I do?

ITT is accredited but unfortunately the education there has deteriorated a lot. My brother graduated in 2005 with a bachelors but my younger brother was not able to complete his program cause the financial side kept on losing his paperwork and so he kept on been pulled out of class, he got tired of it and went to a community college and ITT still took an extra payment from his loan even though he was already out. My parents discussed it with the loan place and it seams that my bro was not the only one. Be careful if you decide to go to ITT, keep copies and keep tabs on everything so that any problems can be cut in the bud. Good Luck.

Often web pages done with MS Word, for example, look like they%26#039;ve been created with word. You%26#039;d do much better to get NVU or Dreamweaver (depending on your budget).

Take the time to download and tinker with some template pages, such as those from OSWD. They%26#039;re free, and although usually not extremely complex, do provide a good foundation for design.

Try to stay away from ones that use tables for the layout - tables went out of fashion since the advent of CSS.

- I would play off the old saying %26#039;A picture is worth a thousand words%26#039;, maybe something like %26#039;If a picture is worth a thousand words, %26#039;Talking Pixel%26#039; websites are worth a million%26#039;.

- Use the name %26#039;Talking Pixels%26#039; to play up the fact that your designs and websites will %26#039;tell your potential customers about you%26#039;. How your designs will %26#039;talk%26#039; to them more then words alone can. How your websites aren%26#039;t just inanimate things but will play an active part in conveying there companies mission.

first of all to get everything to look the same under all browsers under all situation you should probably program the whole site in xhtml then use css to make everything site the way you want it to. Cause anyway you cut it you are going to have to make certain hacks to make it works under each browser. So you right a javascript if statement that determines which browser you have then includes a css style sheet based on that. That is the only true way around it.

I mean, if it JUST the hosting fee, then there are places online where you can get that for free, sometimes even without advertisements. You have to consider the whole thing seriously. Setting up a web page, or even a site, is not a problem by itself. If you have no experience, you could find someone to do it for you with low costs. However, a site with no exposure or web presence worth nothing. You have to optimize your jewelry site for search engines, promote it in all possible ways and invest a lot of time, effort and resources in getting targeted traffic to your site.

Consider your web site as you consider any other business. Build a business plan, set up targets and milestones and define your budget for investing in your site. Otherwise it is good for showing to your friends and not much more.

Hi,

This is a complicated question, and I am sure you will get heated responses from passionate users on both sides. To directly answer your question, the difference betwen ASP.Net, C#, VB, SQL are that it is used on servers running Windows. All the aforementioned products are part of the Microsoft suite. They are all high quality, but the licensing costs add up quickly.

PHP %26amp; MySQL are platform independent products. They are also open source so you can develop them without worrying about the associated licensing cost. Although, .Net definitely has a dedicated following, PHP/MySQL is still extremely popular espcially among smaller copmanies, and individual developers.

Finally, CSS, JavaScript, Xhtml are web design tools which you will use regardless of whether you choose PHP or .Net. The last three are all standards created by the w3c organization. At this time, there are no vendor specific replacements for these technolgoies, and almost every web designer knows them.

As far as preferred, it depends on the job you are seeking. I don%26#039;t think either will be outdated very soon. .Net is newer and Microsoft is pushing insane sums of money to ensure its adoption, but PHP has been around for many years. There are so many applications using PHP that it is unlikely the language will be outdated, especially since it fills a crucial niche.

I have been using php/mysql for 4 years now and I love it, I can have a server installed and running with php and mysql in 10 minutes, try that with asp.

Microsoft is not going anywhere soon, and neither is the open-source movement. Functionally, anything you can do with ASP.Net/SQL Server (or with JSP/Oracle, for that matter) can be done with PHP/MySQL and vice versa. Performance-wise, there may be differences, but they are by and large determined by things over which developers have no control (hardware configuration, database server settings, etc.)

So in the end, the choice is purely aesthetical. If you like object-oriented programming, understand Windows API well, and don%26#039;t mind spawning three objects every time you need to read a remote Web page, .Net is for you. If you are more of a Unix person thinking in terms of strings and sockets, PHP is a better fit.

Which will be preferred for a longer period? Neither, since there is no clear preference now, nor is one likely to form in the future. Cost-sensitive projects will always gravitate toward open-source, while those with money to burn will always want the latest (expensive) toys from Microsoft, IBM, and Oracle...

I am rather new to web design and when I run my page in IE I get the pop-up, %26quot;To help protect you security, Internet Explorer has restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls that could access your computer.%26quot; What could be causing this? Will it pop up on most Ie browsers? I can%26#039;t figure out what it%26#039;s blocking. Any help or suggestions would be very helpful.

Chances are you are using some type of javascript in your page. With the default security settings in IE you will always get that message. It isn%26#039;t an error just a warning.

The problem with that is of course ,if you are getting that message so is everyone else using IE when visiting your page. Look for where you are using a javascript, and get rid of it if possible.

ActiveX and scripts in web design?

It%26#039;s probably blocking some kind of script. I don%26#039;t know much about what ActiveX does, but it usually is harmless. I%26#039;ve never had anything bad come from it, that%26#039;s just IE being IE. I suggest getting Mozilla Firerox. It%26#039;s faster and has a whole bunch of addons you can add and features you can customize. Not to mention IE has that security hole that I think still hasn%26#039;t been fixed. Just allow the ActiveX if you need it, like for a program that runs on the page or something, that%26#039;s what I%26#039;m guessing it%26#039;s for.

the only reason you dont get those popups in firefox is cuz they just automatically allow just about everything, and they call it secure!

anways, if your using a free website provider, then it is likely that they add popups and banner adds among other shizzle to ur webpage that might be requiring active x controls

It all depends on how you desire your website to look overall. If you%26#039;re designing a portal-like Website (i.e. Yahoo, Google, etc..) then it would be best to use a CMS (Content Management System) to develop a general site theme.

If it%26#039;s more genre-oriented (such as Gamespot for games or like Pandora--a site based off music) then you%26#039;d want to use photoshop to develop an overall layout for your site. Use this overall layout as a backbone template for each page on your site. Save this overall template under a separate .png file so that you could modify its colors whenever you want to change a specific page%26#039;s atmosphere.

From there, elements such as the nav, advertisement panel, headers, footers, etc.. can be added to each individual page or the main template.

I%26#039;m not exactly sure what you%26#039;re asking for, but this method would be the best approach - and you%26#039;ll have a WYSIWYG final product

the *best* way is to use css in all your pages in conjunction with the graphics you created from your %26#039;template%26#039; so that all your pages have a similar style, background, header, etc etc - if you wanted to go one step further you could use simple %26#039;server side includes%26#039; to create one main page that loads another page within a specified section of the main page - this means that menus and everything around the content stays the same and only the content changes:
